According to Wikipedia sources, “the 6.5x55mm is a rifle cartridge developed in 1891 Serial around 600. I tend to think that around 1k is a pretty good estimate for a low number matching 96 or original 96--I doubt a few mismatched parts.
Swedish Mauser M96/38 Short Rifle. In good looking condition and originally maker marked from the Carl Gustafs weapons factory in 1908 as a M96 long rifle and rebuilt/updated in the 1930's to short rifle configuration, serial numbers no longer match. Stock and hand guard are sound, missing the stock disc, lightly sanded. Metal surfaces have a blued finish (likely reblued) with a correct brite bolt.
Features the Vastaras fine adjustment rear sight. Chambered in 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser the bore has very good rifling with frost in the grooves. Import marked on the barrel.
